New social media sites and faster methods of communication are continuously vying for students' attention. Some teachers say that the slang students use to express themselves in these mediums is trickling into the classroom-and creating a growing problem that they are unsure how to remedy.
Terry Wood, a foreign language teacher at St. Mary's Ryken High School in Leonardtown, Md., says that her students' use of texting and social media has resulted in a dramatic decline in their writing abilities. "Even in e-mails to teachers or [on] writing assignments, any word longer than one syllable is now abbreviated to one."
