Integrate social-emotional learning through a balanced literacy framework.

Together Voices Literature & Writing and Voices Leveled Library provide a scaffolded solution for social-emotional learning.

Develop oral language

Students develop their oral language skills to discuss the read-aloud literature with their partners, in small groups, and in whole group. They further develop and use these skills as they apply social-emotional learning strategies in partner brainstorming and partner sharing.

Advance Social-Emotional Learning

Building on the reading and writing skills you already teach, Voices takes advantage of the connection between social and academic outcomes by infusing literacy instruction with

  • social-emotional learning themes.
  • social-emotional learning skills.
  • character education approaches.

Analyze complex text

Carefully selected, culturally diverse Teacher Read-Alouds provide students opportunities to make connections to the text, its characters, and many cultures, for the development of vocabulary, discussion, and writing.

Using leveled books in small groups, students read increasingly complex text—including narrative nonfiction and expository texts, realistic and historical fiction, biographies, folktales, and more—that expand the range, quality, and complexity of their reading.

Build academic vocabulary

Students improve vocabulary as they

  • learn word relationships and nuances in word meaning, including academic and domain-specific words in the listening vocabulary Minilessons.
  • are exposed to theme vocabulary through the Teacher Read-Aloud and reinforced in small group and writing.

Practice reading skills/strategies

A wide selection of leveled books

  • provide opportunities to instruct and practice comprehension strategies and skills, vocabulary, word study skills, and fluency in small groups.
  • include School-to-Home activities.
  • allow students the experience of fluent, independent reading at their level for both pleasure and to motivate them to take on more challenging, complex text.

Deepen Comprehension

Students learn to use rich vocabulary, academic language, perspective taking, and complex reasoning skills to deepen their comprehension of text through discussion and writing.

Promote close reading

Students use close, purposeful reading of leveled books to

  • find text evidence to support their thinking and deepen their comprehension.
  • build knowledge and compare multiple texts.

Strengthen Writing Skills

Each theme’s culminating process-based writing project is inspired by the Teacher Read-Aloud literature’s rich content and associated listening, speaking, thinking, and response writing instruction.

Writing skills improve with Minilessons that build to the writing project in each theme. Students are instructed on

  • Common Core State Standards text types (Narrative, Informative/Explanatory, and Opinion or Argument).
  • the six traits of writing.
  • the writing process.

Increase collaboration

Utilizing discussion and collaboration routines—partner sharing, partner interviews, and partner brainstorming—for exploring content, students develop trusting relationships and become better able to share their perspectives, to listen and to communicate.
