COLUMBUS, OHIO (October 10, 2012) – Bullying is an ongoing issue in the education community. On January 14, 2013, to promote a proactive—rather than reactive—approach to bullying prevention and social-emotional learning (SEL) in schools, Zaner-Bloser, in partnership with the Institute for Urban and Minority Education, is hosting Beyond Bullying: Safe Schools, Successful Students. The Educational Summit at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City, allows top district decision makers and education leaders an opportunity to learn how integrating SEL into the curriculum prevents bullying and increases academic achievement.
“Social-emotional learning can be a vital part of the school curriculum because it gives students the chance to recognize and manage emotions, develop empathy and concern for others, and ultimately learn to make better decisions,” said Dr. Ernest Morrell, professor of English education and Director of the Institute for Urban and Minority Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Dr. Morrell, a presenter at the Summit, added that research shows students who can recognize and manage their feelings become better learners and contribute more positively to classroom and school cultures.
