The Fight for a Cursive Comeback

In this interview by NPR’s Cory Turner, education experts discuss role of cursive handwriting in today’s schools. The conclusion? It is important to focus on handwriting (whether print or cursive or both) early and often.

But, with today’s technology, some still ask why handwriting skills are necessary. According to Dr. Virginia Berninger, professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, as students’ brains develop, handwriting lays the groundwork for keyboarding. She says that 21st century students need to be "multilingual by hand" (this is the phrase Dr. Berninger uses to describe the ability to demonstrate both handwriting and keyboarding skills).
