Handwriting Still Counts: Cunningham Elementary School Fifth-Grader Wins National Contest

Maryam Al-Saidi, a fifth-grade student at Cunningham Elementary School in Houston, TX, earned a special post on the Houston Independent School District News Blog when she became the manuscript winner of the Nicholas Maxim Award in the 2014 Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest. The Nicholas Maxim Award category is open to students with a cognitive delay, or an intellectual, physical, or developmental disability. Al-Saidi has a variant form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth, a peripheral neuropathy disease that causes atrophy of the muscles in the hands and legs.
