Schools Address the Lost Art of Cursive

Although educators differ in opinion regarding the importance of handwriting instruction, research shows that students are better able to retain information and organize their thoughts when they write by hand versus typing on a keyboard.

Many schools across the country continue to teach handwriting, and the hundreds of thousands of students that enter the Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest each year offer proof of the continuing interest in this skill. Students at Dover East Elementary School in Ohio, for example, have been participating in the Contest since 1995.
