Why Learning to Write by Hand Matters

As a proponent of 21st century skills and technology, Susan Vachon, a middle school learning-resource teacher and founder of Optimally Learning, did not believe that handwriting was a necessary skill for 21st century success. When she encountered students who couldn’t write legibly, she directed them to word processing or voice-recognition software.

A six-month sabbatical in France changed Vachon’s opinion about the importance of handwriting. During that time, she learned why the French curriculum recognizes handwriting as an essential skill.
