Zaner-Bloser Encourages Families and Schools to Read Aloud on March 7th

Research Shows Reading Aloud Builds Better Learners

COLUMBUS, Ohio (March 6, 2012)-Words are powerful, especially when read aloud. To help celebrate World Read Aloud Day on March 7th, Zaner-Bloser, one of the premier publishers of research-based reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary and handwriting programs, wants to remind parents, teachers and caregivers of the benefits that reading aloud offers children and students.

Zaner-Bloser recently launched a new reading resource called Voices Literature & Writing. Designed to support positive school climate initiatives, the program also enriches literacy instruction and student achievement through the power of teacher read-alouds. New for grades K through 6, Voices Literature & Writing offers all students access to the content of appealing, relevant and culturally diverse teacher read-aloud literature from award-winning authors and illustrators. The program’s framework also supports the goals of the Common Core State Standards, whose authors encourage teachers to read stories and nonfiction selections to children because listening comprehension outpaces reading comprehension until the middle school years. Reading aloud gives all children—regardless of their reading level—access to the same content.

“I encourage teachers, parents and caregivers to read aloud to children. For some, this may be the only time they are read to,” says Patricia Bailey, Reading Product Manager for Zaner-Bloser. “Research shows that children who are read aloud to at home have a greater academic advantage over peers not getting that exposure,” says Bailey. Zaner-Bloser offers the following tips for parents and caregivers in preparation for World Read Aloud Day:

  • Make reading enjoyable by choosing a comfortable place to read.
  • Establish a pattern of reading aloud frequently.
  • Ask children questions as you read.
  • Encourage children to talk about the book.
  • Read many kinds of books and reread favorites.
  • Relate events in the book to activities and events in the child's life.
