Flexible Instruction

Read for Real features flexible instruction that helps students transfer reading strategies across the curriculum.

When to Use Read for Real

  • Complement your basal instruction with targeted reading instruction in nonfiction text.
  • Teach all six units at the beginning of the year to provide a solid foundation in nonfiction comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency.
  • Intersperse units throughout the year to complement the curriculum and maintain a focus on important skills in reading for information.
  • Provide summer school or after-school instruction in nonfiction strategies to give students solid skills in reading for information.

Teaching Options

Teach students reading at different levels or on the same levels with a common instructional framework that provides consistent strategy instruction throughout the program.

Differentiated Instruction

  • During whole group instruction, introduce and/or review the unit strategies.
  • During small group instruction, students work cooperatively through the Learn and Practice selections.
  • Students work independently through the Apply selection, comprehension tests, optional writing, and extension assignments.

For Differentiated Instruction, select materials to match the reading level of each student.

One Level of Instruction

  • During whole group instruction, introduce and/or review the strategies being taught and work through the Learn selection.
  • During small group instruction, students work cooperatively through the Practice selection.
  • Students work independently through the Apply selection, comprehension tests, optional writing, and extension assignments.

For One Level of Instruction, select the appropriate reading level for your classroom.
