Keys to Legibility

Explain to students that good handwriting is legible handwriting. The most important thing to remember is that readers must be able to read a message in order to understand its meaning.

Brainstorm with students about the qualities of legible handwriting. Write their responses on the board. These might include neatness, carefully written letters, and letters that are not too crowded.

Point out that there are four Keys to Legibility. They are easy to remember because they all start with the letter s: Shape, Size, Spacing, and Slant.

Explain that Shape describes the strokes that form each letter and give it a unique appearance. Size describes the height of letters. Spacing describes the space between letters, words, and sentences. Slant refers to the angle of writing on the paper. Using these Keys will help students improve the legibility of their writing.
