String the Straw (To develop the wrist and thumb)

Materials needed:
1 yard of plastic string
1 clear plastic drinking straw

Have the student hold the straw in his/her non-dominant hand and use the thumb and forefinger of his/her preferred hand to feed the plastic string into one end of the straw until the string is completely pushed into the straw.

This exercise helps to develop wrist extension, so that the thumb pad can be made to touch any of the finger pads to hold or to manipulate objects with the fingertips.
