Activities to promote handwriting and language development for ELLs

Included throughout the Teacher Edition, Support for English Language Learners provides teachers with cultural notes and activities appropriate for students at varying levels of language acquisition.

Using academic language to describe the strokes is particularly important for English Language Learners (ELLs). Teachers can use Total Physical Response to demonstrate these terms.

Activating background knowledge is another important way to help ELLs learn. Students can draw on literacy knowledge of their first language as they learn to write the English language.
