Developing Students' Writing Skills

Each theme's culminating process-based writing project is inspired by the literature's rich content and associated listening, speaking, thinking, and response writing instruction.

Students are prepared for this project with Minilesson instruction on writing forms using the Six Traits of Writing, Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions. These Minilessons provide explicit instruction in writing forms that underlie the Common Core State Standards text type (Narrative, Informative/Explanatory, and Opinion or Argument) of each project. Each Writing Form Lesson follows this structure:

Present a Model • Analyze the writing form and discuss writing traits
Skill Minilessons • Teach Minilessons on traits for the writing form
Apply in Writing • Respond to the writing prompt
