Shift 1: Regular practice with complex texts and their academic language

In the READ! sections of each unit, students practice reading complex texts and have opportunities to grow their academic and domain-specific vocabularies.

Shift 2: Reading, writing, and speaking grounded in evidence from texts both literary and informational

In the THINK! sections of each unit, students answer text-dependent questions and use evidence from the text to support their responses. They use evidence from multiple informational sources in the WRITE! section of each unit.

Shift 3: Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction

In each of the content-area units, students increase their knowledge of the world around them by interacting with engaging nonfiction sources.
